Northampton film’s Cannes screening
A SHORT film set in Northampton highlights the issues of drugs and prostitution.
The new film is based on a true story of a woman whose life was torn apart.
Director Kemal Yildirim, 31, from Kingsthorpe, is a freelance film maker and youth mentor.
He said: “The film is a gritty social drama that captures the heart of its audience.
“Based on a true story, a series of events that happened to a friend of mine, her life was torn apart after being entrapped in the life of drugs and prostitution.”
Kemal wanted to get to the point on issues he feels a lot of films just brush over.
Kemal said: “So far it has worked, we have interest and are developing the script as we speak and fingers crossed we will be filming this year.
“I am based in this town and it’s my home and I’ve always made a stand that I would continue to work in this town. That’s why the feature film will partly be shot here.”
He added: “I was fortunate to get Jack Marsden as one of my main leads. He had such a fantastic career winning two Baftas for the TV show Cops.
“He was so impressed with the film and the way myself and my team worked so hard to complete the film he offered to screen the film for me in Cannes 2008. He was as good as his word.
“The film was well received with investors and producers and distributors all willing to talk to us about the film and all expressing their interest.”
The film was launched at the Picturedrome, Kettering Road last Thursday, January 15.
The event raised money for two local charities.
Kemal explained: “My friend who went through the whole ordeal wanted the film to help other people in similar situations so the charity screening was to help raise money for CAN (Drugs, alcohol and homelessness) and NRICC (Northamptonshire Rape and Incest Centre).
“Both these organisations ethos fits in with the themes of film.
“We are hoping to start castings and crew calls pretty soon so if anyone wishes to participate in the making of the film in front or behind the camera or wishes to support the film financially then contact me on info@kemal yildirim.com or www.kemalyildirim.com.”
Film of prostitute’s true tale shown at Cannes Film Festival

The 25-minute film has been shown at the Cannes Film Festival and interest has been shown in making it into a full-length film.
It has already been screened in Manchester and will be shown at a charity screening in Northampton next week. Heartbeat actor Jack Marsden appears in the film.
Mr Yildirim, from Kingsthorpe, Northampton, said: “Rose is based on a series of events that happened to a friend of mine at college.
“She went into a lifestyle of drugs and prostitution and she got trapped in it.
“She wanted me to be able to turn it into a story and highlight what happened to women in that lifestyle.”
Northampton was used as a location for the film but its story is not set in the town, and if Rose is made into a feature-length project Mr Yildirim said it would be partly shot in the town.
He added: “I wanted to bring film-making to Northampton because I’ve based myself here.
“Even when I get funding I said I wanted to film here because it’s my home town.
“Using Northampton wasn’t meant in an offensive way but to highlight problems. It’s just where it’s based. I didn’t want to highlight Northampton as this type of place.
“I’ve shown the film to my friend and watching it was an emotional feeling for her but at the same time she was very happy. It’s managed to put a lot of demons that she had away. It’s told her story in a way she couldn’t tell a lot of people, and it’s affected her in a positive way which is good because she was a close friend of mine.”
He said his friend had escaped her former way of life and was “very happy” now.
The screening of Rose will take place at 7pm at the Picturedrome, Kettering Road, Northampton, on Thursday, January 15. Entry is £5 on the door and proceeds will go towards CAN and the Northamptonshire Rape and Incest Crisis Centre.
Northampton film-maker has his sights set on Hollywood!
Its not everyday that a film-maker from Northampton has one of his movies get a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
That’s exactly what happened to Kemal Yildirim.
His film, Rose was shown at this year’s international film festival in France and has already got a number of offers from producers, interested in making it into a feature film.
Kemal working behind the camera
Kemal is very loyal to the county and all of his films are shot and made in Northamptonshire, with local actors.
